Scottish Highland Games: A Brief History and the Main Events by Gary McKraken

Every time I think about the Highland Games, I always think of that one line in Braveheart: “You dropped your rock.”

Not nearly as fun a book as you might think, but it’s cheap, short, and informative, especially for those of who would otherwise just see overly-muscled men and women tossing tree trunks around with no understanding apart from “that’s simply what Scots do.”

This little book covers all of the main events, including the ones that don’t involve heavy lifting or tossing, such as sword dancing and, of course, bagpipes.  The rules are explained for the events, and where possible, the origins are given.  All in all, not a bad little book.  Short, simple, to the point.
