Robert McGinnis has been a professional artist since the late 1940s. Decades later, his art has adorned a wide variety of paperbacks novels from Perry Mason and other famous detectives to romance and fantasy novels. He’s painted Robin Hood, Camelot, the Old West, and a variety of landscapes. He’s equally known for his gallery work and his magazine prints, some of which has been published for the likes of National Geographic, Cosmopolitan, Cavalier, Good Housekeeping, and Guideposts. Where might you have seen his work? Perhaps you recall the movie posters for Thunderball, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, The Odd Couple, Live and Let Die, Barbarella, The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes, and Comes a Horseman, just to name a few.
And yet, most of his fans seem not to know his name. People I talk to immediately recognize his artistic style even if they don’t know a specific piece, but his name escapes them. With this in mind, I proudly point my fellow art lovers in the direction of this book.
This is one of those wonderful over-sized hardcover coffee table books that reprints the art in scale large enough to see the detail, with plenty of biographical and professional information packed in between with alternate images and roughs. It’s a beautiful book. It’s a classy book. Dare I say, it’s timeless. I personally keep this on my shelf alongside works on Leonardo, Monet, and examples of modern Gothic art. For me, McGinnis’ style reads somewhere between pulp art and fine art, but the fact is he moves back and forth between the two styles and blends them seamlessly. As one of the most successful commercial artists of the 20th century, his work deserves to be known. This book was a long time coming, and totally worth the wait.
