The last few days, I’ve been immersing myself in the magic of Walt Disney, specifically the early years, the European influences, and the road to Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Simply put, overwhelm is understatement. I’ve known for a long time the level of work and innovation that went into this film, but I’ve been doing a deeper dive this time around, much as I tend to do for films like Star Wars or Metropolis. Snow White has a great deal in common with those films, so much so that the creation of the film itself borders on science fiction. I should have done this ages ago, because this film really sits at the crossroads of so many things that I hold near and dear. The more I learn, the more I can’t believe how much we take for granted today. I can’t wait to share some of this when I finally write up my Mouse Magic post. The hardest part will be whittling it all down to a manageable sized blog. I’m making connections I’ve never made before, looking at the original art, the inspirations for that art, the original story, the music… really getting into the process for how a film like this got made in the first place, especially at the time it got made. I am in complete awe, in the purest sense of the word. Just thought I’d share that.
