RIP, Chuck Berry

It’s unlike me, but I’ve let the entire weekend go by without tribute a fallen legend.  I got the word early Saturday evening that the great Chuck Berry has passed on, age 90.  I remember last year the internet was on fire regarding David Bowie and Prince.  Say what you will, those guys would have never done what they did had it not been for the likes of Chuck Berry.  Only one #1 hit, but Berry fueled the spirit of Rock n Roll for decades, starting near the beginning.

As is so often the case, I’m still not able to adequately process this yet.  But unlike the early passing of so many, at least we can say Chuck had a good, long run of it.  And the ride’s not over.  He’s been working on a new album for years, and my understanding is that it was completed.  Just needed a little post-production work.  We’re expecting that sometime in the next few months.  I’ve been looking forward to that since it was first announced.  I only wish he could have stayed with us long enough to see it released.

Here’s to you, Chuck.  Thanks for the memories.

  1. I once asked my boss if I could leave early on a Friday in 2008 because I felt the need to drive 7 hours to a rugby club in the Lake District and see Chuck perform. My boss at the time agreed that this was entirely necessary and I went.
It rained in buckets. No one cared. The show started late. No one cared. What mattered was that Chuck rocked that place.
