Star Trek‘s official YouTube channel just posted this. Thought I’d share.
I have to say, I love the composer’s enthusiasm. I’d be giddy too. Good on him for landing the gig.
At first listen… it’s not very distinctive, which means this series has no real musical identity of its own as near as I can tell. I hear the classic Alexander Courage fanfare with the brass bumps a la Jerry Goldsmith at the very end, with strains of Michael Giacchino’s movie theme woven in. The original fanfare needs to be in there somewhere, but there is a 50-year legacy in place that says the musical identity is just as important as anything else. I need a distinctive theme. What little is there right now seems overridden by the familiar. And that’s part of the problem. I love Giacchino’s music, but the Kelvin stuff has no place in this if this truly is part of the original Prime timeline. That’s going to bug me.
Maybe it’s just me, but even this is just underwhelming to me. But then, I’m not exactly thrilled with many of the trends in modern scoring. Maybe I just need to let it grow on me; I’m pretty sure I’m spoiled by all that back there.
What do you think of this theme?
