Happy Hobbit Day!

Today is Hobbit Day!  All Tolkien insiders know this, but in case you find yourself not in the know, today is the shared birthday of both Bilbo (2890) and Frodo Baggins (2968).  And when Frodo turns 50 in 3018, the day after that is the day he and Sam set out from Bag End with the One Ring.  But we’ll not speak of such dark necessity further.

Today is a day of feast and fun!  Or in my case, a side tray and a good book, at least until some troublemaker with a pointy hat comes knocking on my door.

“If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.”

— Gandalf, The Hobbit

  1. Well spoken, but the words of a dwarf, which makes the hoarded gold part all the more significant:

“No,” said Thorin. “There is more in you of good than you know, child of the kindly West. Some courage and some wisdom, blended in measure.
If more of us… (see above). But sad or merry, I must leave it now. Farewell!”

Regardless, I am with you folks: Couldn’t agree more! When do we start?
